Vantaan Ihastus

A fully emission-free residential building from construction to operation through collaboration between Voltan, Sirius Capital Partners, and Geolo
A Fully Emission-Free Construction Site and Residential Building in Vantaa
The construction-phase climate control of Asunto Oy Vantaan Ihastus was delivered entirely emission-free using the Geolo total solution. During operation, heating is provided by Voltan Lähienergia through its geothermal energy system.
The targeted CO₂ emission savings during the construction phase amount to 165,000 kg.
Construction-phase heating is one of the most significant individual contributors to CO₂ emissions and energy consumption in building projects. Geolo enables, for the first time, the controlled and emission-free use of geothermal energy for year-round construction-phase climate management. As a result, the project achieves a low-emission and energy-efficient outcome.
The quality of climate control during construction is elevated to an entirely new level.
The 165,000 kg of CO₂ savings corresponds to approximately a 4.8% reduction in lifecycle emissions compared to fuel oil. This is equivalent to driving 1.12 million kilometers with an average-emission car—roughly 28 times around the Earth. In addition, the solution enables approximately 70% savings in purchased energy.
A Strong Shared Vision Unites the Project Stakeholders
The approximately 4,000 m² property consists of 81 apartments across eight floors. Collaboration between all project stakeholders has been strong from the outset. Sustainability and long-term positive impact were key drivers already in the planning phase.
The residential property, owned by an entity within the Sirius Capital Partners group, is being developed sustainably and in an environmentally responsible manner by YIT as the main contractor. Construction began in August 2022 and is scheduled for completion in January 2024.
“Vantaan Ihastus is an excellent example of YIT’s low-emission construction and our concrete steps toward carbon neutrality. A strong shared vision and close collaboration with Sirius, Voltan, and Geolo have played a key role,” says Marko Oinas, Strategy Director and Head of Housing Development at YIT.
Operational performance has also been carefully planned.
Voltan as the Long-Term Energy Provider
Voltan Lähienergia will act as the energy provider for the completed building, with a focus on locally produced geothermal energy.
Annual CO₂ emission savings during operation, compared to district heating, are approximately 51,800 kg. Over the first 10 years of the building’s lifecycle, total savings are expected to reach up to 683,000 kg of CO₂, equivalent to more than 4.5 million kilometers driven by a passenger car.
“Environmentally friendly construction and responsible energy use during operation are core values for Sirius. Vantaan Ihastus is a strong example of how low-emission residential construction can be achieved through collaboration with skilled contractors and service providers,” says Stefan Wiklund, Director at Sirius Capital Partners.
Optimized Lifecycle Performance with Geolo Technology
From the perspective of both Voltan and Sirius, maintaining the condition of the geothermal field during construction is critical. Geolo’s patented and award-winning technology ensures efficient energy production while simultaneously charging the geothermal field with excess heat generated during construction.
This approach ensures that the geothermal system is in optimal condition for long-term use. In addition, the final heat distribution system remains unused during construction, ensuring that all systems are in pristine condition at commissioning—from both the energy provider’s and the property owner’s perspective.
“Our collaboration model with Geolo is seamless and benefits all project stakeholders as well as the environment. We are proud to enable emission-free heating even during the construction phase,” says Miikka Lemmetty, CEO of Voltan Lähienergia.
High-Quality and Safe Living Conditions
Economical and environmentally responsible construction, combined with efficient property operation, creates high-quality living conditions for residents. Geolo’s comprehensive climate control during construction enables a high standard of building quality, ensuring safe and healthy living conditions throughout the building’s entire lifecycle.
“The construction industry is one of the largest sources of emissions globally, with buildings accounting for over one-third of total CO₂ emissions. It is encouraging to see growing interest in sustainable solutions across the industry. Innovation supports both construction companies and property owners in achieving their sustainability goals,” says Janne Vanhanen, CEO of Raksystems Climate Solutions and creator of the Geolo solution.
